![]() The event seems to justify all of those negative thoughts you had about yourself. They are rapid, automatic and spontaneous thoughts that people have in reaction to particular events. This presentation put another dent in your confidence. The third type of thought the cognitive model distinguishes is called automatic thought. These core beliefs are called the cognitive triad, and an example is: I am incompetent, others. When you have anxiety, you are especially affected by negative core beliefs about yourself, the world or others and the future. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between depression, negative automatic thoughts, life satisfaction, number of symptoms, psychologizing, somatizing and normalizing in young adults. How many times have we done this? Gotten ourselves so worked up that we can barely make it through something that is typically well within our capabilities. Negative automatic thoughts are also more superficial and therefore much easier to influence. You barely scrape through your presentation, stumbling on your words and failing to connect the points you worked so hard to create. Even though you know your presentation subject matter very well, you can’t seem to articulate your thoughts in the way you want to. As you begin, your thoughts are running rampant and you’re feeling as anxious as ever. After time spent grappling back and forth and procrastinating going, you make it out the door and now you’re just starting your presentation. In the study, it was found that there was a statistically negative strong correlation between mindfulness and negative automatic thoughts of patients with depression (p < 0.05). Is it any surprise that our thoughts so directly influence our feelings? The things that we tell ourselves matter. Overall, you’re feeling really bad about yourself and the last thing you want to do is present. We can think of our automatic negative thoughts as the situational expressions of our dysfunctional assumptions and negative core beliefs. Negative thoughts appear to be associated with depression in all regions of the world, cementing this construct as a hallmark feature of the disorder. Your thoughts start up: “I’m going to mess up”, “No one is going to like my presentation”, “I can’t even talk in front of a group, how am I going to achieve anything?”, “I’m worthless”, “I’m a loser”, “I should just stay home so I don’t make a fool out of myself”. They include psycho-education about thoughts and beliefs identification and challenging of negative automatic thoughts (NATS) via cognitive restructuring and schema therapy. You have a massive presentation today and you hate having to speak in front of groups. You wake up feeling tired, groggy, and insecure.
